Welcome to St Marks Anglican Cathedral

Welcome to the Cathedral Church of St Mark the Evangelist situated in the City of George in South Africa.  George is a town with a population of about 150 000 people and is set in the heart of the Garden Route   The town has the majestic Outeniqua mountains as a backdrop and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Nearby are some of the remaining magnificent indigenous forests of the area and about 10 km to the south of the town is the Indian Ocean. Here we find long sandy beaches and the smaller Victoria Bay which is a favourite spot for surfers.

The Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of George who presides over the widespread Diocese of George which extends from Swellendam in the West to Plettenberg Bay in the East and inland to Ladysmith, Beaufort West and Graaff Reinet.

The Cathedral Parish is blessed with a beautiful stone building designed by Sophie Gray, wife of the first Bishop of Cape Town, and dates back to the year 1849 when the corner stone was laid. The church was consecrated by Bishop Gray on 7th December 1850.  For further details  and a tour of the Cathedral please select the History, Church Tour and Stained Glass sections on the Menu alongside.
